The Hapsburg family ruled in Europe for centuries, their reign finally ending with the conclusion of World War I in 1918. In the 1500s, the monarchs controlled both Spain and Austria, which allowed them to move Spanish horses to the royal court in Austria and to the village of Lipizza, also in Austria at the time. The treaties that ended the Great War divided Lipizzaners between Italy, Czechoslovakia, and Austria. When war engulfed Europe again in the 1940s, Lipizzaners were threatened, as the German high command wished to collect all the mares and foals. General George Patton and the United States Army saved the breed by relocating the horses to Austria as the war ground to a close.
